Over the last few years, I have perfected my biscuit recipe. While I usually simply make biscuits, sometimes I use the dough for other purposes. Today, I was craving my mother’s sweet rolls.

Before I left home for the first time, I sat down with my mother’s recipe box and wrote down my favorite dishes. These were all written to fit on a 3×5 card, written to remind her about how to make the dish. As a result, they are often hard for anyone else to “unpack” the sometimes cryptic instructions. It is the Fourth of July, so I decided to do something a little patriotic. Red jam, white flour and dried blueberries seemed just the ticket for a holiday breakfast.

Sometimes, Jan eats Alpen cereal for breakfast. For the last week, she has been saying, “I should make muffins with the Alpen one morning.” I finally caught on to what she was really saying which was, “You should make Alpen muffins one morning.” This is that morning.

For me Claudia’s Chocolate Mousse is the mousse by which all others are judged. It is however, not a health food. It has replaced cakes as the go-to dessert for special occasions. Jan has spent years perfecting the techniques of making this mousse, but it took her years more before she dared to tinker with mom’s recipe. This Easter, Jan made chocolate mousse with Drambuie.

Jan asked me to make some cookies for a bake sale at the university. Before I left home for the first time, I sat down with my mother’s recipe box and wrote down my favorite dishes. Her chocolate chip cookies was one of my favorites, growing up.

This year I was unable to participate in the family holiday rum-ball spectacular. I was in Italy, and also had the stomach flu. That is indeed as unpleasant a combination as it sounds.
So now that I’m stateside and better, Christmas Eve I did some pickup cookie assembling. I popped on A Very Murray Christmas (which I love but my parents can’t stand) and made my own twist on Jan’s Christmas Rum Balls. Only, I used bourbon and scotch whiskeys. The base is the same, the boozy variations follow.

A few weeks ago I had some peaches sitting on the counter in danger of over ripening. Jam was the obvious solution. Jan thought it was “too sweet.” This flaw did not stop her from eating the entire jar in two weeks.

This weekend, I am making Israeli couscous with almonds, Jan decided that chocolate mousse with Amaretto would be a good dessert for my Father’s Day dinner.

I had used alcohol in my mulled port tri-tip and brandied mushrooms, so Jan thought she would use Irish whisky in a sauce to pour over ice cream for dessert.
