Miriam decided to bring a salad to add to Sunday’s chicken dinner. She was rather vague about what she used as a dressing. She has been very busy at work, but she may fill in the blanks later.

Wife Jan is very fond of carrot salad. I am making barbecued chicken and Jan has requested a carrot salad to go with it. While the seasoning of the bird is “mostly” French cuisine, I decided to use a more Japanese dressing on the carrot salad. That’s called California Fusion.

Daughter Miriam has been sick lately and cannot eat anything in the pepper or lily families— no chili powders, garlic, leeks, onion, or peppers (even bell peppers). This has made Sunday dinners quite a challenge lately. I decided to barbecue some tri-tip this Sunday and I thought a cold vegetables salad would go well with the beef.

I love Japanese potato salad, I cannot stop trying to gild the lily. The last time I made this dish it was still lacking something, I tossed out some ingredients and added others. Being a Californian, there is one addition that I knew would make this creamy salad better, avocado!

Last week, I made Uyghur bierocks for dinner. I made some Uyghur carrot salad to go with it. However, I got a bit heavy handed with the Indian chili powder. My salad was so spicy not even Eilene—who has a high tolerance for such things—could eat more than a few bites.

When I proposed my usual Greek lamb for this Easter’s dinner, I was faced with a bit of a revolt. We finally settled on both ham and salmon as the main dishes. While the ham is obviously completely un-Kosher, the salmon somehow put me in a vague memory of the bitter herbs of a seder. While I am not Jewish—and the meal I came up with has some decidedly non-Kosher dishes—a bitter herb salad seemed like a good side dish.

February 13th was Fat Tuesday and wife Jan asked for Louisiana food for dinner. She sent me several URLs for “Louisiana salads.” Some had ingredients that were very un-Louisianan. Others were very starchy—since I had decided on red beans and rice as my main dish, I wanted something a bit lighter.

I am making Moroccan chicken tajine and I wanted a vegetable dish. While many tajine recipes include the vegetables in the stew, I wanted something on the side. Wife, Jan really likes carrot salads.

I made a Japanese feast on Sunday and one of my dishes was hamachi shots—Chef Jeffrey Stout’s signature recipe at The Sea by Alexander. Whenever, I make these taste treats I have a small piece of fish left over—in this case it was the dark fatty bits near the fishes center line. I usually eat this for lunch the next day.

I frequently make some food for Jan’s Ethno Breakfast. For the last one I had made a dozen curried deviled eggs, that apparently disappeared in the first few minutes of the event. They went over so well that when one of Jan’s Chinese students came to dinner, I did a variation of those deviled eggs. Jan told me that she was expecting 30 ethnographers to show up to this month’s event. She asked me to make 24 dozen—48 half eggs—because they were so popular last time.
