My sister, Karen, and I were at the Christmas breakfast table reminiscing as one does. The subject of beef tongue came up. Our mother, Claudia, would make beef tongue occasionally as we were growing up. I decided to whip some up to go with the Chickyssoise I was making for dinner.

Karl’s Greek Broiled Lamb
A visiting sister gives me a good excuse to bring back some of my best dishes from the year. The Greek barbequed lamb, and Karl’s Greek Lemon Pilaf that I made for Easter were really successful. However I was sure I could make them even better. A cold green bean salad would complete the meal.

Karl’s Green Bean Salad
I am making Greek lamb for Christmas Eve dinner with my sister, Karen. A lettuce salad does not seem like the right side dish. I thought I would do a cold green bean salad.

Karl’s Dijon Ham
This weekend we are going to see the second installment of the Hobbit. This leaves me with a dilemma, what am I going to make if I am going to a three hour movie just before dinner? This is that sweet spot between Thanksgiving and Christmas when the left over hams are half price.

Karl’s Beef Stew with Porcini and Ruby Port
Adapted from a Dirk Niepoort recipe
Jan is meeting her knitting group for their yearly holiday knitting and gift exchange party, so no fancy Sunday dinner this week. Eilene is off to have dinner with friends, so it is just Jan and I for dinner tonight. Jan has requested beef stew because it makes such good leftover for weekday lunches.

Karl’s Turkey Mulligatawny
Turkey Mulligatawny is a childhood memory. Every year, that I can remember, my mother, Claudia, would make it with the carcass of the Thanksgiving turkey. It is, however, as Indian as chop suey is Chinese. Simply, not something a native cook would make.

Karl’s Mac & Cheese with Bacon & Cauliflower
Today is Eilene’s 18th birthday. Her mother is in Chicago. Her sister is in Peru. She had school and work all day. She will have her real party later next week. To celebrate the day, she is having some friends over and she requested mac & cheese.

Karl’s Bavarian Schweinsbraten (Pork Shoulder Roast)
Last Sunday I made a Georgian pork roast. This left a good bit of leftover meat. I used part of the meat to make pork tacos early in the week. When I make taco filling I add lots of chilies, onions, and celery. After we had eaten our fill I was left with a good bit of taco filling left over. I used this meat to make sixteen tamales. These were so good that Jan asked me to make more pork this weekend, so we will have leftovers for tamales next week.
