Jan really liked the last mushroom soup I made. She asked for a soup just for the two of us, Eilene—who hates mushrooms—was off on an overnight. Reworking that recipe actually improved it quite a bit.

Jan’s friend is coming to join Jan in a visit to Santa Barbara—the yearly gathering of women who went through UCSB’s Anthropology Program in the late ‘70’s. I decided to make the sweet potato and peanut butter soup I made earlier this week for their lunch, but she is allergic to both tomatoes and milk.

Jan had a temporary crown put in on Monday and she wanted a soft creamy soup for dinner. In times past this would mean some variation of vichyssoise, potato and leek soup. I am always looking for something new, so I started thinking about an African sweet potato and peanut soup/stew.

Jan is hosting this year’s Ladies Christmas Get-together. Some of her friends are vegetarian. I am making a chicken dish for the meat eaters and a pasta dish for the pasta lovers. We decided that a soup would be a good dish for the vegetarians.

Before I left home for the first time, I sat down with my mother’s recipe box and wrote down my favorite dishes. I have referenced my mother’s strada before, but I did not post the original recipe. Today I am posting another variation, so I thought I would put up Claudia’s family recipe. My memory is she was making this in the Fifties, long before it became a fashionable dish in the Seventies. Two Sundays ago, I bought some Persian cucumbers for a dinner that did not happen. I did not want them to spoil. There were too many of them just to eat on my own, so I decided to make pickles with them.

I made some shredded pickled carrots for Jan, while her mouth was healing. I did not think they were anything special, but she really liked them. Today, I was at the Japanese store and saw some nice carrots. I decided that I would make some more for my Japanese dinner tonight.

When Jan was visiting her friends, one of them made a salad out of the January issue of Bon appétit. She bought the magazine and asked for this salad for dinner. While the salad looked good, I wanted to make some changes. I do not like cooked squash, especially cold cooked squash.

Jan’s is still on her blended food diet, her mouth surgery should heal soon, and she has lost her holiday weight. Every day she has created a new smoothie. Today, she is using coconut water with pulp (El Mexicano brand). This one was good enough that she was tempted to add rum and make it a real Piña colada.

I went to the dentist today, so I have joined Jan’s soft food diet for the day. Despite last night’s yam fail, she sent me a Martha Stewart recipe she wanted me to try. It is not really in my nature “to do” Martha Stewart. I did not change everything about the recipe, but just about. This is more of a “inspired by” rather than an “adapted from” recipe.
