Karl’s Apple Wood Smoked Teriyaki Tri-tip

Fanime is this weekend, so we have had a bunch of teenagers camped out on our living room floor. Our usual Sunday dinner got pushed to Memorial Day. Traditionally this holiday means barbecue. Jan asked for tri-tip.

Karl’s Teriyaki Sauce/ Marinade

This sauce goes well with any meat and many vegetables. If you leave out the cornstarch it is also a good marinade. This is my variation of the sauce my mother, Claudia, used in the 1950’s.

Claudia’s Chocolate Mousse 2.0

Miriam requested my mother’s chocolate mousse for her birthday dinner. Jan has experimented with variations over the years, but Miriam wanted the original “plain” chocolate mousse. Jan chaffed at this restriction, until she thought of using Strauss milk.

Karl’s Hoisin Turkey Meatballs

Eilene’s friends are coming over again for Game of Thrones and this week’s theme is “marshmallows.” [Teenagers—what can I say.]  Eilene has requested sweet potato casserole. This was a dish my mother, Claudia, always made for Thanksgiving. Sweet potatoes are however a side dish, but the meal still needed a main dish.

Karl’s Peach and Strawberry Crisp

I saw some peaches and strawberries in the market today and I decided to make a fruit crisp. This is a dish from my childhood with many fond memories. This dish may also be called a crumble, because you crumble the topping over the fruit.

Claudia’s Apple Crisp

Before I left home for the first time, I sat down with my mother’s recipe box and wrote down my favorite dishes. She would usually only make this a few times each year, but we always loved it.  Continue reading

Karl’s Game of Thrones Stuffed Meatloaf

Eilene is having friends over for Tuesday night shows and I always try to make something exotic for them. Looking at the recipes for Game of Thrones, they are either too simple, too complex, or take too long to make.

Karl’s Cornbread & Claudia’s Johnny Cake

I am making ham steak tonight and my choices were baked yams or cornbread to go with it as the starch. I chose cornbread. While Jan will not touch cornmeal “mush” she loves cornbread.

Karl’s Baked Pear Crumble

I saw some pears in the market today. Although I usually do not make desserts, I thought about my mother, Claudia, and her baked apple crumbles. She would slice apples and spread a oatmeal mixture on top and then bake it to sweet, gooey/crunchy delight. I decided to adapt her recipe to pears.
