Karl’s Potluck Curried Deviled Eggs

Being the cook of the family, Jan frequently asks me to make something when she needs a mitzva meal or a dish for a potluck. Last week it was Ethno Breakfast—a local (Bay Area) meeting of corporate ethnologists. Since all except the largest firms hire only one person in this discipline, this can be an isolated job—one anthropologist amongst an entire company of engineers and MBAs. Jan has been pushing this field for several years, so some of the local practitioners are her former students. Ethno Breakfast provides a community to share ideas and problems once a month.

Karl’s Buttermilk Chicken Curry

This is a meal that started with a bottle of pickles. Jan went to the Maker Faire and came back with a jar of McVicker Pickles curried cauliflower. Chicken curry seemed like a good dish to go with them.

Karl’s Goan Fish Curry

If no one has given me a challenge for a Sunday meal, I am left to find one for myself. I keep track of everyone who has “liked” one of my dishes and—when I have time—I run through their sites looking for inspiration and ideas. One such site is Linda Creation, which introduced me to Goan cuisine.

Karl’s Chicken Curry Pasty

I have been seriously into stuffed breads lately. I made bierock last night and they were very popular. Jan asked for something with chicken for tonight.

Karl’s Chicken Curry

This dish started out as a butter chicken, but as I read about the confusion of this dish with Chicken tikka masala, the only conclusion I could come to was that neither one was a traditional Indian dish before about sixty years ago. Both dishes were adaptations of traditional Indian dishes to British tastes. One origin story for chicken tikka masala is a chef in Scotland, although this is disputed in Punjab.

Karl’s Methi Murg (Chicken Curry with Fresh Fenugreek)

I am making Indian Shepherd’s Pie today but the top and bottom halves of this recipe can be standalone dishes. I am posting them separately for anyone who would like to make as a dish in their own right.

Karl’s Japanese Chicken Curry

Eilene is having a bunch of her friends over for an overnight. She challenged me to make a Japanese curry. I do not particularly like Japanese curry, but it is for her and her friends.
