Jan loves pie. Miriam loves pie. Eilene loves pie. Guess what Jan is making to go with my roasted pork for dinner.

Every Christmas for more than the last decade I have made marmalade as a giveaway. I would make 40-60 twelve ounce jars at a time. It always takes several days to process and cook all of that jam.

Jan wanted a simple dinner of brats and potatoes. Eilene wanted more vegetables. I tried to please them both.

The other day, Eilene complained that it has been a long time since I have made samsa. I have filled these baked pocket breads with lamb and spinach in the past and they are very popular in my house. I thought about mixing the lamb and the spinach versions, but Jan rejected that idea.

Jan likes flax bread, but because of her oral surgery she did not eat the loaf that I bought her last week at the Farmer’s Market. The loaf is now stale. It is either throw it away and waste the bread or do what cooks have been doing with stale bread for centuries, bread pudding.

When Jan made her bread pudding, her plan was to divide the recipe into two. One small pudding for our breakfast and another for dinner over at Miriam’s tonight. Because she slept in this morning, she did not think she would wait for the pudding to bake before she had to go to the gym. I suggested pancakes.
Last year, I created an orange infused sugar, which rapidly became a staple on my counter. It is a simple recipe, just zested orange peel and sugar. It allows you to add a sweet orange zing to anything you are making—tea, breads, whatever—without have to go to all of the effort of finding an orange and zesting it on the spot. This always leaves you with the dilemma of: What do you do with the rest of the orange?

This is a family recipe from Jan’s father. I do not know where the name comes from (Charlie Browns?), but it is an excellent breakfast. It is, however, one that you generally have to plan ahead for.

I want to make Charlie B’s tomorrow. This is a leftover breakfast, but to make it you kind of have to have the leftovers. I already had the potatoes, but I needed the sausage. That meant bratwurst for dinner tonight.

I am not sure that this even counts as a recipe.
I have leftover Karl’s French Chicken Salad from last night. I usually try to have leftovers from my meals, so that someone (or several) can have a nice lunch the next day. Jan wanted crackers with her serving of chicken salad. I decided to put mine on a croissant.
