I decided to experiment with pickled green pepper (Piper nigrum ). This is a new spice for my family, so I plan to go cautiously. When I did my surf and turf for Miriam’s birthday I discovered just how good a tri-tip could be with simply salt and pepper.

Karl’s Green Pepper Sauce
Jan and I were watching a BBC documentary series called The Spice Trail, detailing the sources, history and uses of six common spices. One of the spices detailed was black pepper. It turns out that the ornamental pepper trees of my youth have nothing to do with the spice on the table.

Karl’s “Potato” Salad – Two Ways
These salads are based on my mother’s potato salad, but the kids are coming over and this is a dilemma. They are on the Atkins diet, which means no potatoes. I decided that I would make two almost identical salads: One with potatoes for those of us eating starchy foods and a second with the potatoes replaced with cauliflower.

Karl’s Honey Balsamic Glazed Salmon
I made some biscuits for a weekday dinner and I wanted something to go with them. Today, I felt like salmon. Trying to think of something new to do with it, I used some honey and Balsamic Vinegar de Modeno.

Karl’s Moong Dal Tadka with Chingri (Shrimp)
I have recently discovered dals. Not that I did not know that they existed, but that they were easy to make and not just restaurant fare. Many of the recipes I have found call for cooking the legumes in a pressure cooker—which I do not own—or alternatively cooking them for hours. I have found that neither of these is required to produce a decent dal.

Karl’s Fish Taco Salad
Jan was gifted with two small heirloom tomatoes and a large ripe avocado. She requested a dinner with salsa and guacamole. I have gotten a bit tired of fish wrapped in a taco shell, so I thought I would turn it into a salad.

Karl’s Pigs in a Blanket Two Ways
I thought the kids were not coming over this weekend, they have been on and off on a low carb diet. Myr just got back from Italy and they had a friend’s wedding on Saturday, so I thought they were not coming over. Jan had challenged me to do a gourmet “pigs in a blanket.” The kids have changes their minds and are coming over, but they will eat high carb.

Karl’s Broccoli and Cheese Empanada
I am making “pigs in a blanket” for Sundays dinner, but man does not live on bread and meat alone—as much as some might try. I had found how to make the perfect crust dough, so I thought I would make a vegetable empanada. I decided that broccoli was a good choice, with maybe some onion and a little potato and some sharp cheddar to give it some bite.

Karl’s Tarragon Potato Latkes with Fresh Pear Sauce
Eilene has been asking for latkes lately. She has a friend coming over for dinner, so this seems like a good day to make them. Always trying new things, I decided to use tarragon and replace the usual apple sauce and sour cream with pear sauce and crème fraiche.
