Jan and I were discussing what to have with the challah I was making. Jan wanted me to make super-mini challah in the mini-muffin pan. Jan piped up with you could put jalapeños in it and they would be challahpeños! How far will this family go for a good pun? Apparently quite far.

Karl’s Challah Rolls
Adapted from a Leah Cooks Kosher recipe
Jan bought some salmon while she was in Seattle—a package of three different salmon for a tasting. She wanted it with fresh crackers for her birthday dinner. Miriam’s TMJ is so bad lately that she could not eat the crackers. I decided to make challah, a very soft Jewish bread, for her to eat with her fish.

Karl’s Pumpkin Bread
It is Tuesday and Eilene’s friends are coming over. Today’s theme is pumpkin. My original thought was to make pumpkin soup, but one of the friends is going to make that. I remembered my mother’s pumpkin bread and Eilene liked that idea.

Claudia’s Pumpkin Bread
Before I left home for the first time, I sat down with the recipe box of my mother, Claudia, and wrote down my favorite dishes. This is the original recipe. I, of course, had to make a few changes when I made it.

Karl’s Hamburger/Hotdog Buns
Adapted from a King Arthur Flour recipe
Jan wanted “plain hamburgers” for Labor Day. I decided that “plain hamburgers” called for fresh buns. Hamburger and hot dog buns should be soft and slightly sweet.

Karl’s Cream Crackers
Yesterday I made fig jam. Jan decided that we should make tonight’s dinner a cheese and fig jam tasting. I could run out and just buy some crusty bread, but fresh crackers see the better choice.

Karl’s Saffron Chicken and Leek Corn(ish) Pasties
Adapted from Frugal Feeding
My girl’s are all over the place today. Mom is going over to Miriam’s after work, to swim and de-stress. Eilene is up in San Francisco with a friend. They will be hungry when they finally get home, but there is no telling when that might be.

Karl’s Orange Custard
I made Jan’s orange custard earlier this week and I decided to add some of my Ultimate Micro Orange Marmalade. While I thought it was perfect, Jan thought it was too sweet—Jan’s custard already had half of the sugar that most of the recipes on-line use. To please her I eliminated the Orange Infused Sugar entirely. This dish does not suffer for having only a small bit of sugar.

Karl’s Rosemary Parmesan Crackers
The kids are not coming over for dinner tonight, so Jan wants cheese and crackers for dinner (AKA deli dinner). She wanted some plain crackers, but I have been testing the limits of fresh crackers. Today’s savory cracker is rosemary Parmesan topped with salt and pepper.

Karl’s Sweet Potato Biscuits with PB&J
Last week Jan had a work lunch that had Sweet Potato Biscuits with PB&J. She brought some leftovers home for us to try. She suggested that this would be a good thing to serve the teenagers on their Thursday movie night.
