It is Spring Break, so Eilene’s Thursday show night has been moved to Saturday. They are watching the last Lord of the Rings movie. It is time to think up some new Shire recipes.

Karl’s Shire Seed Cake
Adapted from Recipe Wise
Eilene is having friends over to watch the last Lord of the Rings movie. It is time to think up some new Shire themed recipes. I am thinking seed cake and honey chicken wings.

Our Spring Break
Some may have noticed that I have not posted anything in the last week. We have been on spring break in Death Valley and the Owens Valley. Jan was born in Lone Pine— actually in Bishop, where the only hospital was at the time—and she needs to get back to the high desert every few years to recharge.
While I normally use this blog to post recipes, Eilene has become quite the nature photographer. She took over 500 pictures while on this trip. Here are just a few of the best. Continue reading

Karl’s Mediterranean Wild Rice Pilaf with Chicken and Shrimp
Eilene has settled into a routine of a video night on Thursday. Three to five of her friends will show up to watch the Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones or whatever they are into that week. I, of course, am delegated to feed the masses. It is a struggle to think, “What will I feed several starving teenagers this week.”

Karl’s Corn Beef Hash
One of the joys of a St. Patrick’s Day meal of corned beef and colcannon is having corned beef hash the next day. In New England, they add beets to make it “Red Flannel Hash.” Personally, I think this is gilding the lily and not something a Californian, like myself, would be inclined to do.

Miriam’s Balsamic Strawberries
Myr and Jan went to a pot-luck at Pie Ranch yesterday (Hey, for them this is work). Myr’s contribution the meal was Balsamic Strawberries. These are good all by themselves, but they can also go equally well on a mesclun salad or vanilla ice cream.

Karl’s British Scones with Currents
In a recent Cooks Illustrated, they had a recipe for British scones. I woke up thinking about making scones this morning, but Jan had cleaned up and I couldn’t find that issue. Fortunately I remembered enough of the discussion about the differences between American and British scones to wing it.

Karl’s Corned Beef and Cabbage
I have never been overly fond of corned beef and cabbage, but like most part Irish-Americans I have usually made it on St. Patrick’s Day. Part of the reason for this dislike was because, like most Americans, I would go to Safeway and buy the plastic package of bright red meat. This sour meat would be tossed in the pot with potatoes, carrots and cabbage to be boiled to death.

Karl’s Colcannon II
I do not pretend that this is an authentic Irish recipe. It is more of a California Fusion revamp of the original. I doubt that chicken broth or garlic were readily available in a traditional humble Irish cottage. That being said, there is no reason not to make it as traditional as possible.

Karl’s Mojo Carne Asada Tacos
As I have researched various recipes I have come across many references to Seville sour oranges. I was in Real Produce yesterday and, for the first time, there they were. I had to buy them, although I had no idea what I would do with them.
