Karl’s Pears with Mandarin Marmalade

Wife Jan’s college friends are visiting and I have been cooking up a storm. I had decided to make Hoe-waffles and it seemed a bit of a scant breakfast. I had a couple of pears in the basket I and decide to make a side fruit salad. Pears just by themselves seemed just too plain, so I quickly thought to add some marmalade.

Karl’s Ginger White Peach Jam

We have a new neighbor across the street and my usual practice has been to gift new neighbors with a jar of jam as a welcoming to the neighborhood. Surprisingly, I had no  jam on hand—normally I have 4-5 jars ready to distribute or for personal consumption.  I needed to make a new batch.

Karl’s Kumquat Marmalade

Ever since I watched the first episode of Miss Fisher, I knew I had to try my hand at kumquat marmalade. I promise I won’t use the poisoned sugar.

Karl’s Seasonal Fruit Salad

BBQ is a tradition meal for Memorial Day. I was serving wings and a variety of salads. A fruit salad seemed the right dessert to go with this meal.

Karl’s Bartlett Pear Quick Jam

I am making a roasted chicken with some pear jam that I was given as a Christmas gift. I thought that some people might need a substitute for this ingredient, if they cannot find commercial pear jam. I thought a quick small batch jam was what was needed. Continue reading

Karl’s Cherry Bruschetta

Adapted from a Pacific Coast Farmers’ Market Association recipe

Jan and I were at our local farmers’ market and Jan spotted a table with piles of free printed recipes. This one appealed to her, so I made it for her. It substitutes cherries for tomatoes, the common base ingredient of brushetta. I took it one step further and used my favorite, Rainier cherries.

Karl’s Pomegranate Curd

Adapted from a Fine Cooking recipe

Jan loves lemon curd, so a while ago I made some with Meyer lemons. It worked out so well that I have made it a couple of times. It is really tasty, but it does not last or keep long.

Miriam’s Balsamic Strawberries

Myr and Jan went to a pot-luck at Pie Ranch yesterday (Hey, for them this is work). Myr’s contribution the meal was Balsamic Strawberries. These are good all by themselves, but they can also go equally well on a mesclun salad or vanilla ice cream.

Karl’s Pear Compote

Eilene’s birthday party turned into an overnight, so I had to come up with a breakfast. Eilene asked for waffles. I had a Bosc pear on hand so I decided to whip up some fruit compote to go on top.

Jan’s Grilled Fruit Skewers

Jan saw a bunch of fruit at the farmer’s market and thought, “What goes with lamb skewers? Fruit skewers!” Some of the fruit was not quite ripe and I suggested that since I would already have the grill going we could throw them on. Jan thought this was a good idea.
