As a Californian, I like to do mash-ups—taking the ingredients of one culture and the cooking techniques of another to create something new. Jan wanted taco’s, but I was growing of the same old, beef, pork, chicken or fish with the usual Mexican spices and salsas. I decided to take kubideh and make something different with it.

Karl’s Cuban Picadillo
Adapted from a Cook’s Illustrated recipe
I get these emails from Cook’s Illustrated as they put up their videos. This week’s video included a recipe for Cuban Picadillo. I was inspired to make it for this Sunday night’s dinner.

Karl’s Za’atar Pizza with Beef and Onions
Looking for a quick Saturday night dinner. Jan wanted za’atar pizza, but Eilene and I wanted a bit more protein. Beef on the side to add as you will.

Karl’s New England Boiled Dinner (a.k.a. Corned Beef and Cabbage)
Chris requested New England Boiled Dinner for his birthday. According to Wikipedia: This is a “traditional New England meal, consisting of corned beef, or a smoked “picnic ham” shoulder, with cabbage and added vegetable items, often including potato, rutabaga, parsnip, carrot, white turnip and onion.” This is one of the original American “one pot meals.”

Karl’s Pot Roast and Smashed Potatoes
Jan wanted comfort food after her family’s visit and she requested pot roast. I have made more complex versions of this dish, but I wanted this to be a home-y version. A hearty “meat and potatoes,” closer to what my mother, Claudia, would have made.

Karl’s Ezo Gelin Soup II
Jan has a friend who is getting oral surgery and will have a week where she will not be able to chew. My brother-in-law and his family are also coming to the Bay Area and they all have troubles with their teeth. Soft soups are the order of the day and I decided to make three soups that I have made before: Ezo Gelin, Maafe, and Avgolemono. Half I will give to Jan’s friend as a mitzvah and we will have a soup tasting for the family with the rest.

Karl’s Chili Dogs
Jan and I were reminiscing about chili dogs the other day. Jan used to live only a mile away from Angelo’s in Fresno—a victim of eminent domain for the high speed rail—and in her mind the home of the ultimate chili dog. Eilene decided that she wanted chili dogs for her birthday meal—19 as of yesterday.

Karl’s Mexican Rice with Beef
At four o’clock today, Eilene told me that her friends were coming over for dinner. She suggested florescent mac and cheese, trying to make it easy on me. I just could not do it. This meal was really almost as easy, and so much better for them.
