Karl’s Corn Chowder with Langoustine

This is Jan’s birthday week and around this house birthday celebrations tend to get stretched out for a week. Her birthday is in the middle of a busy week, Wednesday, so her main feast will be this Sunday. I was planning on making her favorite, corn chowder with crayfish.

Karl’s Cream of Broccoli Soup au Gratin

I am making Beef Bourguignon this Sunday and I was thinking about a vegetable side. I have done green beans to death and I am sure that my family would like something  a little different. I thought about steams broccoli with a cheese sauce, but fussing with making a sauce at the very end of the cooking time gets a bit hectic. Then I thought, “Why not make it a soup?”

Karl’s Shrimp and Clam Chowder

For weekday meals I have been known to take short cuts, like starting with a canned soup. Usually I boost the “tinned” flavor with some fresh seafood, but my daughter, Eilene, objects—“But fresh is so much better!” I have created a monster.

Karl’s Miso Soup II

I am made a Japanese meal last Sunday. Chicken teriyaki skewers, rice balls, inari and various pickles. No Japanese meal would be complete without miso soup.

Karl’s Tamarind Seafood Curry Soup

Adapted from Serious Eats and Cracking Curries recipes

Son-in-law, Chris, requested a crab curry for this Sunday. It seems to be just past Dungeness season, so there was nothing but very expensive King crab in the stores. I bought some packaged crab meat and stretched it with some cod.

Karl’s Lamb Bone Soup with Cabbage and Green Beans

With Jan out of town, I made a lamb stew for Sunday night’s dinner. I also made this lamb soup. Son-in-law, Chris, asked why I did not simply throw everything into one pot. In my mind I had an image of the thick, rich lamb stew and a second vegetable soup with lamb bone broth. While it may all end up in the same place, it would not be the same dining experience to mix the two dishes.

Karl’s Japanese Style Carrot Soup

Adapted from a Smitten Kitchen recipe and a Just Bento recipe

Once again, Eilene is having friends over. I decided I would make chicken teriyaki and rice. I wanted to make a side dish, but it was too late to make pickles. I have been making blended soups lately, so I thought I would make a carrot soup with an Asian twist.

Karl’s French Onion Soup

Adapted from Simply Recipes

I went to Panera Bread and had their French onion soup the other day. It reminded me of my mother’s soup, but it is not one of the recipes I copied down when I left home. I thought I could do better than Panera, so I decided to gave it a try.

Karl’s Yellow Gazpacho

I finally have a little time to start surfing through the sites of the people who have liked my recipes in the past three years. I have religiously kept track of everyone who has ever “liked” one of my recipes, but I have had little time to do more than just visit their “about” pages. This summer, I have been working my way through other people’s recipes. When I saw Caitlin’s recipe for Yellow Gazpacho I knew I had to do something like it.

Karl’s Lemon Grass Chicken Soup II

When I join my wife for lunch by the university we sometimes go to Café Pomegranate. While this is primarily a Persian restaurant, sometimes they go a bit wild with their soup of the day. Last week it was lemon grass soup. It was so good that I decided that I would have to deconstruct it.
