Jan took some bananas with her when she went to hang out with her friends this weekend. In the end they did not eat them, but the travel left them in pretty sorry shape. Banana bread for breakfast!

Karl’s Shepherd’s Minced Pie
Jan is still eating soft food, but she is getting tired of smoothies. A few weeks ago, I made a Thanksgiving chopped turkey shepherd’s pie for her brother, who is also having difficulty chewing. Today, I thought I would make a lamb version for Jan.

Karl’s Turkey Rancher’s Pie II
Note: Today, I am posting a soft food shepherd’s pie and I mention in my discussion that I had made one earlier for Thanksgiving. I realized that I had never posted the recipe.

Karl’s Ezo Gelin Soup
Ezo galin soup is a Turkish dish that comes with its own mythology. I was attracted to the recipe because of Jan’s dietary restrictions. Her oral surgery is healing, but she cannot eat solid food. Cooked bulgur, lentils, and rice seemed like just the ticket for a dish that was soft, but not blended into baby food.

Jan’s Piña Kalelada
Jan’s is still on her blended food diet, her mouth surgery should heal soon, and she has lost her holiday weight. Every day she has created a new smoothie. Today, she is using coconut water with pulp (El Mexicano brand). This one was good enough that she was tempted to add rum and make it a real Piña colada.

Karl’s Curried Sweet Potato Soup with Apple Crème Fraîche
I went to the dentist today, so I have joined Jan’s soft food diet for the day. Despite last night’s yam fail, she sent me a Martha Stewart recipe she wanted me to try. It is not really in my nature “to do” Martha Stewart. I did not change everything about the recipe, but just about. This is more of a “inspired by” rather than an “adapted from” recipe.

Karl’s Apple Ham Hor d’Oeuvres Spread
I went to Safeway’s today and they had half hams for 49 cents a pound. For that price I could not pass one up. I like to cut these up into one inch streaks and freeze them for future meals. Tonight, I was already planning to make a sweet potato soup for Jan, but I knew that Eilene would like a bite of ham. She has been feeling a bit protein starved lately. I saved a couple of small ham steaks for our dinner.

Karl’s Orange Glazed Salmon
I suggested salmon for Eilene’s and my dinner tonight. Eilene’s response was, “Salmon, salmon, salmon!” Jan, sadly, is still eating blended foods, so she having the left over scallop soup from two nights ago. I am also making mashed yams and Carolina coleslaw to go with tonight’s fish.

Karl’s Mashed Yams II
Jan is still on her very soft food diet from her oral surgery. She is having some of the vichyssoise for dinner, but she has been craving something with a bit more bulk. She asked for mashed yams. Last month, I made some that she really liked, but I think I can make them better.

Karl’s Carolina Coleslaw
I am making orange glazed salmon and mashed yams tonight. While Jan is on her soft food diet this dish will be too hard for her to eat, however, Eilene wants something besides baby food for dinner.
