Karl’s Cucumber and Jicama Salad

I am having a crowd over tonight. Stitches is in town so the aunties, Pat and Barbara, are in from Fresno overnight. Miriam and Chris decided to come tonight so they could see them too. Having more people to dinner means more food restrictions. Pat does not eat pork or beef and Barbara will not touch tomatoes. Miriam needs soft foods and Chris does not eat starches.

Karl’s Chinese Chili Roasted Brussels Sprouts

I did not want all of my dishes to be the same, so I decided to leave the Sichuan pepper out of this one. When I am home alone, I will frequently make a lunch of some sautéed vegetables with a tablespoon of Chinese chili garlic sauce stirred in. I decide to carry that idea a step further in these roasted vegetables.

Karl’s Szechuan Shrimp Stuffed Mushrooms

A salad, which was my original plan, did not quite an appropriate side dish to such an Asian meal. Eilene had planned to go to a party. I decided on a mushroom dish, which she would never eat.

Karl’s Sage Turnips and Green Beans with Orange Marmalade

Jan and I were at the farmer’s market. I had already planned on green beans to go with my roasted pork, but Jan saw these cute little turnips. I decided to combine the two vegetables and add some of the marmalade I made yesterday.

Karl’s Tarragon Mixed Mushrooms with Meyer Lemon

Everybody in my family, except Eilene, loves mushrooms. She doesn’t like the texture. This leaves me with three options when I use them in cooking.

Karl’s Rotkohl II

I want to make Charlie B’s tomorrow. This is a leftover breakfast, but to make it you kind of have to have the leftovers. I already had the potatoes, but I needed the sausage. That meant bratwurst for dinner tonight.

Karl’s California International Pickles

Two Sundays ago, I bought some Persian cucumbers for a dinner that did not happen. I did not want them to spoil. There were too many of them just to eat on my own, so I decided to make pickles with them.

Karl’s Japanese Quick Pickled Carrots

I made some shredded pickled carrots for Jan, while her mouth was healing. I did not think they were anything special, but she really liked them. Today, I was at the Japanese store and saw some nice carrots. I decided that I would make some more for my Japanese dinner tonight.
