Claudia’s Potato Salad

I making potato salad for the Fourth of July today, and I am making it based on, my mother, Claudia’s recipe. I have had to make some adjustments—I am not trying to feed seven hungry mouths and—while I remember there being celery in it—there was none listed on her 3×5 card recipe. Another twist is that Myr and Chris are on the Atkins diet, so I decided I would make a second salad—with cauliflower replacing the potatoes—just for them. Continue reading

Jan’s Low Sugar Chocolate Mousse with Drambuie Butterscotch Sauce

For me Claudia’s Chocolate Mousse is the mousse by which all others are judged. It is however, not a health food. It has replaced cakes in our house as the holiday treat. Jan has spent years perfecting the techniques of making mousse, but it took her years before she dared to tinker with mom’s recipe.

Jan’s Drunken Cherry Chocolate Mousse Cake

I am finally getting around to writing up the recipe that Jan created for Miriam’s Birthday. At our house, my mother’s chocolate mousse has become the standard birthday treat. Jan has made several variations of this creamy dessert, for this one she decided that should would add cherry liqueur.

Jan’s Chocolate Mousse, the Chris Variation

For me, Claudia’s Chocolate Mousse is the mousse by which all others are judged. It is however, not a health food. It has replaced cakes as the birthday treat in our house. Jan has spent years perfecting the techniques of making mousse, but it took her years before she dared to tinker with mom’s recipe. This weekend is Chris’ birthday dinner, so Jan decided she would create a variation just for him.

Claudia’s French Toast

Fond memories of childhood. The occasional Saturday when my mother would make French toast. Soft, custardy bread dripping with butter and syrup.

Karl’s Rustic Italian Bread II

This is not so much a new recipe as an experiment in bread making. I made my first foray into crusty breads a few weeks ago.  In my experience in bread making, cooking the dough in a dry oven produced a soft crust. I had made a large batch of dough and I thought I would bake half of it in a dry oven and half in a moist oven. Small details make big differences.

Karl’s Pot Roast and Smashed Potatoes

Jan wanted comfort food after her family’s visit and she requested pot roast. I have made more complex versions of this dish, but I wanted this to be a home-y version. A hearty “meat and potatoes,” closer to what my mother, Claudia, would have made.

Karl’s Moroccan Ras el Hanout Barbecued/Broiled Lamb

It’s my birthday and I get to make what I like. This means barbecued lamb. This year I decided I would go Moroccan.

Karl’s Chicken Sausage Dinner Strada (Strata)

When  I left home I copied all of my favorite recipes from my mother’s recipe box. Strada is one of those easy to make and infinitely flexible dishes that can be adapted to breakfast, brunch, lunch, potluck, or dinner.  One of Jan’s friends invited us to a “bring a dish” New Year’s party, so I decided to make a strada.

Cherokee Fry Bread

Before I left home for the first time, I sat down with my mother’s recipe box and wrote down my favorite dishes. One of the dishes I copied was Cherokee Fry Bread. The name she called it is not politically correct, but those were the times.
