Dàn dàn miàn (担担面; “peddler’s noodles”) are boiled noodles with a spicy sesame/peanut sauce poured over them. The story goes that lunch peddler’s would carry a dàn dàn—a shoulder pole with a bucket on either end—with the cooked noodles in one bucket and the spicy sauce in the other. When you bought your lunch you were expected to provide your own bowl and the seller would put in some noodles and splash some of the sauce over them.

Karl’s Cuban Picadillo
Adapted from a Cook’s Illustrated recipe
I get these emails from Cook’s Illustrated as they put up their videos. This week’s video included a recipe for Cuban Picadillo. I was inspired to make it for this Sunday night’s dinner.

Karl’s Creole Chicken Gumbo
The kids are coming over this Sunday. Last week, Miriam and Chris requested gumbo with okra, a signature Louisiana dish. I used to live in Gretna, across the river from the Big Easy, so I became very fond of Louisiana cuisine.

Karl’s Southern Black Eyed Peas
I wanted a side dish to go with my ham steak and roasted vegetables. I know that Jan does not like black eyed peas, but I do. She can just eat more of the vegetables and leave the black eyed peas for me.

Karl’s Ham and Navy Bean Soup
I have a ham bone cluttering up my freeze and I wanted to make a rich ham and bean soup. I have made something like it before, but I thought I would push this recipe a bit further and add some new ingredients. To go with my soup, I thought some beer bread and a cold green bean salad would be good.

Karl’s Japanese Coca-Cola Braised Pork
I love Japanese pickled vegetables and I frequently get the urge to make them. The day before my Sunday dinner I started to make a bunch. Sometimes the side dishes lead you to the main dish, rather than the other way around.

Karl’s Boston Baked Beans
The kids are not coming over this week end, so Jan requested baked beans and hot dogs. Most Americans would grab a can of Van Camps or Bush’s (Heintz, if you’re British) and be good to go. I decided that I wanted to make my own.

Karl’s Corona Beans and Ham
Eilene is at Disneyland and Myr is not feeling well, so it is just Jan and me tonight. Jan wanted something that we could reheat when Eilene gets home late tonight, but also be good for lunches during the week. She decided that she wants ham and beans.

Karl’s Minestrone with Mini Italian Meatballs
My potato plant died this week, so I harvested the potatoes. This was actually a sport from the year before, but if it really wanted to grow who am I not to water it? I ended up with five small potatoes. These were not enough to make a dish by themselves, so I would have to add them to something.
