The mushroom hater is on an overnight at a friend’s house, so Jan asked for a mushroom dish. She really liked the last one I did, so I thought I would do a variation. Soup calls for salad and crackers.

As followers of my blog may know, I generally do not like recipes that consist of “add can A to can B.” However, some days even I do not want to start from scratch. When I can start with a good commercial soup base, I can add fresh ingredients to make a decent meal.

For weekday meals I have been known to take short cuts, like starting with a canned soup. Usually I boost the “tinned” flavor with some fresh seafood, but my daughter, Eilene, objects—“But fresh is so much better!” I have created a monster.

Chris threw down a Basque seafood stew challenge for the new year. In researching the possibilities I found two stews: Marmitako and Ttoro. Marmitako is a tuna and potato dish and Chris is back on his low-carb diet after the holidays. I think Ttoro is more of what he had in mind.

Jan’s friends are coming to town for the Quilt Festival, for me this means several special dinners and this year Jan has ordered a special breakfast. For the first meal on Friday I decided to do a fish stew. Most of the European stews were out, because Barbara doesn’t like tomatoes. Japanese Yosenabe seemed the obvious choice.
