I do not always look on-line for ideas for dinner. Sometimes, I simply say, “What do I have in my kitchen?” I had spent too much of today planning my birthday/Chinese New Year’s feast. When I pulled my head out of the computer, I noticed that it was time to start making dinner, before a hungry wife and daughter appeared on my door step.

Karl’s Curried Sweet Potato Soup with Apple Crème Fraîche
I went to the dentist today, so I have joined Jan’s soft food diet for the day. Despite last night’s yam fail, she sent me a Martha Stewart recipe she wanted me to try. It is not really in my nature “to do” Martha Stewart. I did not change everything about the recipe, but just about. This is more of a “inspired by” rather than an “adapted from” recipe.

Karl’s Calabrese and Cabbage Soup
My nephew, Braden, is staying at Myr’s place and is leaving today. For one last meal together we decided to have a Sunday lunch at her place before they ran him to the airport. Before Miriam and Chris went to his mother’s for Christmas, they gave us some Calabrese sausages. I thought it would be a good idea to uses these for this meal.

Karl’s Chickyssoise
This is Christmas Day and we went to Tai Pan in Palo Alto for dim sum. They do an excellent dim sum for Christmas (but make your reservation well in advance, we almost waited too long). With all of that rich food, we knew that we would want something simple for dinner.

Karl’s Turkey Mulligatawny
Turkey Mulligatawny is a childhood memory. Every year, that I can remember, my mother, Claudia, would make it with the carcass of the Thanksgiving turkey. It is, however, as Indian as chop suey is Chinese. Simply, not something a native cook would make.

Karl’s Georgian Butternut Squash Soup
Our friends Pat and Jim “squash bombed” us a few weeks ago. This was literally a baby sized squash 8 pounds and 20 inches long. I roasted it and used much of it in a mitzvah lasagna for a friend whose cancer has come back for the third time. I am using the rest in tonight’s soup.

Karl’s Italian Sausage, Beans and Barley Soup
Jan is still struggling with her cold, so she wants soup for the second day in a row. I did not want to make the same thing I did yesterday, so I was trolling through the WordPress reader for soups. I looked at several, before one finally caught my eye.

Karl’s Greek Cold Fighting Chicken Soup
Jan has come down with a cold. When Jan gets a cold she drinks endless hot honey lemons (3-4 slices of lemon, 1 tsp. honey, plus hot water). It soothes the throat and the steam clears the sinuses.

Karl’s Sweet Pepper and Fennel Soup with Italian Sausage Meat Balls II
My older sister and her husband will be stopping by this week end. I want to make a nice dinner for them. I decided that my sweet pepper and fennel soup would be a good start.

Karl’s Sweet Pepper and Fennel Soup with Italian Sausage Meatballs
Last Sunday we visited out friends in Fresno, Pat and Jim, who own a farm. With a large kitchen garden, it is risky to stop by their house or have them visit you. Last year, Pat showed up on our doorstep with a twenty pound bag of tomatoes. This year we got pepper bombed and a butternut squash literally the size of a baby. What am I going to do with a big bag of mixed peppers?
