I get these emails from Cook’s Illustrated as they put up their videos. This week’s video included a recipe for Cuban Picadillo. I was inspired to make it for this Sunday night’s dinner.

I am making Cuban Picadillo, a mild Cuban chili. Chili calls for beans and rice. I have made Mexican black beans and rice before, but each country—village?—mother?—has their own take on this dish. This is my take on Cuban Moors and Christians.

I am making Cuban Picadillo for dinner on Sunday, but I had difficulty finding any Cuban green vegetable side dishes. I needed to make more of my orange sugar, which always leaves me with two or three navel oranges to use up after I have removed all of the zest. I decided that an orange wedge and baby lettuce salad would do the trick. To make the vinaigrette “Cuban” I used lime juice and a bit of culantro Recaíto sauce.

We had Cuban Picadillo for dinner and I had some lime juice left over. I had three red pears and I thought that the juice, with some rum, would make a nice Cuban twist on roasted pears. Red pears are a variety of d’Anjou pears.

On Christmas morning my family likes to go out for dim sum (点心; snacks), Chinese small plates. For the last several years we have gone to Tai-pan in Palo Alto, but this year Miriam talked up into trying something new. Eilene’s friends are coming over for their usual Thursday night TV marathon—The Avengers this week. I have made mac & cheese for them several times and I am getting a bit board with it. I decided to do a different cheesy noodle dish using an Alfredo sauce.

The kids are coming over this Sunday. Last week, Miriam and Chris requested gumbo with okra, a signature Louisiana dish. I used to live in Gretna, across the river from the Big Easy, so I became very fond of Louisiana cuisine.

Eilene’s friends are coming over to watch Game of Thrones. I have some fish that I have to use tonight, so I thought I would do a seafood chowder. Some of her friends can be picky eaters, so I am leaving out the onion I would usually add to tonight’s soup

I wanted a side dish to go with my ham steak and roasted vegetables. I know that Jan does not like black eyed peas, but I do. She can just eat more of the vegetables and leave the black eyed peas for me.
